June
June was a rough month for me in some ways. I’d had a ton of calf and achilles issues that relegated me to the treadmill all month, save for the two races where I was able to get outside. The worst part was that I didn’t know why I was having all of these issues. The intermittent nature of the achilles issues was driving me crazy because there was seemingly no rhyme or reason to when or why they’d flare up, or even which one.
In other ways, it was a good month. Being injured forced me to work hard at being disciplined and taking it easy. I also made great strides in weightlifting, though I’m letting that lag a little while I get my legs looser again. Since I realized that it was likely extreme calf tightness causing my lower leg issues, I’ve bought the Roll Recovery R8 roller and pounded my calves into submission. I’m going to give it a little more time and then write up a review of this thing. It’s definitely an amazing tool if you feel like the regular foam rollers aren’t strong enough. So far, though, I’m satisfied.
July
On July 2, I have a 5K that I’d like to PR, despite the likely-adverse weather conditions that will be present at 8:00 am in Texas in July next to a lake. Other than that, I think I’m done racing for the summer. I’m not sure how summer racers do it; it’s just too hot for me.
I’d like to get up to SMU to run on the track once a week, even if it’s only strides in the middle of a run. I want to get more comfortable on the track even though I don’t have a ton of track work lined up this fall in the half plan I’m doing.
I’ll be doing 33 miles, 36 miles, 36 miles, and 39 miles for the next four weeks, and I’ll have an extra 14 from the end of this week, for a total of 158 miles in July. If I end up hitting that, July will be my highest mile month ever. If I end up taking a down week somewhere in there, I’ll be okay with that too.
July will also be Olympic Trials month, which I’m very excited about too! We’ll be working on some stuff with the Olympics at work too, so I’m looking forward to really diving into that.
July is looking like it’ll be a good month.
